SIS Wins Veeam Innovation Award – Orchestration Solution for Veeam Hyper-Availability Platform

June 20, 2018 by sisllc Leave a Comment

VEEAM ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF ITS FIRST ANNUAL INNOVATION AWARDS AT VEEAMON

SIS was recognized as key innovator for delivering powerful solutions that leverage the open APIs and orchestration mechanisms of the Veeam Hyper-Availability Platform

The Veeam Innovation Awards celebrate organizations that are using the Veeam Hyper-Availability Platform in new and unique ways to drive significant business outcomes,” said Danny Allan, Vice President of Product Strategy at Veeam. “These organizations have unlocked incremental business value and agility by accelerating innovation, improving operational efficiencies, and helping them manage the hyper-criticality, sprawl and growth of data at massive scale. We’re excited to see such innovation and creative thinking and can’t wait to see what they and other innovators do next as our platform continues to expand and evolve.”

“Winning a Veeam Innovation Award is a tremendous honor for SIS and all of our employees. Our Team has worked diligently to transform our business to meet the changing needs of our clients and the way technology is consumed. Our continued partnership with Veeam enables us to further differentiate our Cloud, Backup & Resiliency and Managed Services offerings.” – Steve Sigg, CEO

The SIS solution integrates with and automates restoration of Cloud Connect backups into vCloud Director to provide recovery-on-demand. Check out the SIS video describing their solution.

INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS ARCENEAUX – SIS SR. DEVOPS ENGINEER

We are speaking today with Chris Arceneaux. Chris is a key member of the SIS team that created automation to enable better interactions and seamless motions between Veeam Cloud Connect and VMware vCloud Director. This automation was awarded the Veeam Innovation Award during last month’s VeeamOn Conference.

Question: What challenge were we solving when your team began building this automation?

Chris: We wanted to allow a quick, automated recovery for backup jobs customers have placed in our Managed Solution Center through the Veeam Cloud Connect process. Veeam Cloud Connect is a solution that allows customers to get both physical and virtual backups off site, and replicate VMs (virtual machines) without the cost and complexity of building and maintaining an offsite infrastructure. Veeam Cloud Connect provides a fully integrated, fast and secure way to backup, and replicate to a service provider’s cloud repository.

What our solution provides is the ability to restore these backups on a stand-by vCloud Director Environment. This is VMware’s cloud management portal that we offer our customers, and it allows the customer to have full control of those VMs. If the customer has special firewall rules and other credentials, they can configure that into their vCloud Director Environment. Whenever those VMs are restored, they’re able to maintain their same IPs, same subnets, firewall rules that are used in their on-premise environment. It allows the customer to have a decreased restore time, or RTO, in the event of a disaster onsite for them

Question: What are the customer’s minimum requirements to enable this orchestrated recovery process?

Chris: First they need to be using Veeam for their backup, then select a Veeam Cloud Connect partner like SIS as well as determine their reserve pool of VMs / resources to support the recovery of critical applications.

Question: If an organization is not partnered with someone like SIS, what would the recovery process look like?

Chris: The Veeam Cloud Connect solution is essentially offsite storage for your Veeam backups.  To use those backups in a normal disaster recovery scenario, they would have to spin up some servers in another environment that would most likely be cloud-based. From there, they would have to start building out the resources and then restoring. Once they have access, they set up a base Veeam infrastructure. Then they could restore those backups into the new environment. Some customers may struggle with this … There’s a good chance they’re not familiar with any cloud, or they’re not familiar with nuances in security, which is very important for customers leveraging the cloud.

With our solution we can essentially white-glove the restore effort, making it easier to restore critical VMs with reasonable restore times. Considering it’s based off a cold backup the restore times are very good and most small companies can avoid the expense of a warm or hot site DR environment, which in some cases might not be an option. This allows a greater flexibility for customers, and gives them the ability to spin things up when there’s a disaster recovery event or simple test their DR readiness. From there, they now have full control over their network, or their VMs. They get peace of mind and full access with their systems. It’s a win-win all around.
