Synovia Solutions is an Indianapolis-based tech company specializing in GPS-powered fleet tracking. We provide fleet tracking solutions for approximately 120,000 vehicles serving cities, counties, universities and school districts from New England to California.
Founded in 2001, the company has doubled in size in the past four years thanks to its introduction of our school bus tracking app, Here Comes The Bus (HCTB). With more than a million registered users and 4.6 stars in the Apple app store with 40,000 reviews, the app has taken a clear leadership position in this nascent industry.
Synovia Solutions helps its customers save money, enhance service and improve safety by delivering real-time fleet tracking information for organizations charged with keeping America’s municipalities and schools running smoothly.
Problems and Goals
Synovia needed a BCDR (Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery) solution that provided a minimal RTO/RPO for a subset of workloads in their multi-cloud application supported by AWS and a third-party datacenter. The solution needed to ensure AWS VPC’s would maintain secure private connectivity to the non-AWS production and recovery environment without the need to refactor existing applications.
Solution – Hybrid Cloud BCDR with Zerto and AWS
Converge consulted with Synovia to develop a solution based on Zerto replication and inter-cloud disaster recovery. Using Zerto, Synovia could obtain near real-time replication to the recovery environment and minimize data loss during a recovery event. Additionally, rather than replicate data from the third-party datacenter to the Converge datacenter, an inter-cloud disaster recovery solution was recommended. This solution was based out of geographically dispersed CONVERGE datacenters and would ensure application restore times could meet RTO objectives.
While Zerto could easily handle all compute replication and recovery operations, the AWS hosted application still needed to maintain secure connectivity to the production and recovery environment. CONVERGE worked with Synovia to design and build secure, self-healing connectivity between AWS and CONVERGE using AWS VPN Gateways and BGP enabled IPsec tunnels.
Using a hybrid cloud based BCDR solution allowed Synovia to meet aggressive RTO/RPO’s for their critical applications without code refactoring or significant application architecture changes.
